CFR qualifiers include plenty of central Alberta cowboys

The 51st Canadian Finals Rodeo is on the horizon.

It is only three weeks away. This year’s CFR will run from October 1st through the 4th at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

The Canadian Pro Rodeo Association has solidified the official list of qualifiers for the CFR and the top two in earnings this season in saddle bronc are Big Valley’s Zeke Thurston followed closely by Nicholas Patterson from Rocky Mountain House. Ben Anderson from Eckville checks in at number 8.

A few locals have made the cut in tie down roping with Kyle Lucas from Carstairs in 2nd, Clayton Smith from Eckville in 4th, Shane Smith from Wimborne in 5th, and Jason Smith from Wimborne in 7th.

Other local competitors who have secured an invite to the CFR include Ryan Shuckburgh from Innisfail who is 2nd in steer wrestling, Trey Gallais from Sundre who is 4th among team roping headers – Grady Quam from Crossfield is 6th. Jhett Wheeler from Sylvan Lake is in 9th place in bull riding. See the full list of qualifiers online at rodeocanada.com.

This week there are two rodeos taking place that will have their prize money count towards the 2026 season. The Oldstoberfest Pro Rodeo in Olds and the Hanna Indoor Pro Rodeo in Hanna. Tickets to the action at the Olds Regional Exhibition grounds at 6pm on both Friday and Saturday are available online at oldstoberfest.com.
