Ready, set, go!: Council green lights important crosswalk safety upgrades

Assessments conducted on a couple of crosswalks has cleared a path for Olds council to approve some upgrades.

Mayor Dan Daley says the 54th Street and 53rd Avenue crosswalk will be upgraded with signal lights to make pedestrians more visible to motorists.

Just south of that intersection, he adds, the 57th Avenue and 54th Street upgrade will include a complete build of a crosswalk. Mayor Daley says “accessible ramps from the sidewalks as well as signal signs as well, to indicate to drivers when pedestrians are waiting to cross.”

Both motions were approved by council at this week’s meeting at a total cost of about $23,500 dollars ($13,500 for 57th Avenue, $10,000 for 53rd Avenue), which Mayor Daley says will be from a surplus gained from an upcoming study this spring on the 57th Avenue and 54th Street intersection upgrade.
