Olds RCMP reminds drivers that even when school is almost out, bus safety is always in

The Olds RCMP is reminding drivers that while school is almost out, school buses are still operating throughout the community, so safety should be top of mind.

According to the RCMP, with summer vacation around the corner, drivers are asked to be mindful of the fact that school buses are still on the road, and children are still relying on commuters to follow the rules and keep them safe.

Law enforcement says warmer weather and the anticipation of summer can lead to increased distractions behind the wheel, and children can be unpredictable near roadways, especially when entering or exiting a school bus, so remaining vigilant and aware of bus stop procedures and passing laws is crucial in school bus safety.

In an effort to keep roads safe for students the Olds RCMP has issued a list of reminders for drivers to keep in mind as the school year wraps up.

To start, police say if a school bus is stopped with red flashing lights and an extended stop arm, travellers in both directions must stop, unless the roadway is physically divided by a median. On divided highways, only vehicles approaching the rear of the bus are required to stop. Drivers are instructed not to proceed until the red lights have stopped flashing and the stop arm has been retracted.

Failing to come to a stop for a school bus can result in fines of up to $567 and six demerit points.
