Olds RCMP gets Face-booked: Residents encouraged to follow local RCMP on social media

The Olds RCMP is officially on social media.

The Town of Olds is encouraging everyone to give the local RCMP a follow on their new Facebook account to stay in the know about all their operations in the community.

Acting Detachment Commander for the Olds RCMP Staff Sergeant Jamie Day says maintaining a strong social media presence is critical in modern policing.

“In my previous detachment we created a Facebook page and it definitely hit a lot folks in our community, with a lot of great feedback,” he says. “ It’s trying to get information out to the public and build that more modern, resilient, community driven police service.”

Day says the bulk of posting will be surrounding local members’ presence in the community, covering anything from local events to public advisories.

“If members are engaged in community events or school presentations – we just want to get that into our community, the work we’re doing, and in the past we’ve never been able to get that out on any sort of media outlets, and now today we can, we’re more modernized, and it gives us an opportunity to really highlight the excellent work that the members are doing here at the Olds Detachment,” he says. “Also at the same time providing safety features for the public, we just released one the other day for seniors for seniors week.”

“It’s a way of getting information sharing out there and just letting the public know what we’re doing, operationally and obviously within the community.”

The Staff Sergeant maintains the new Facebook page is not for reporting crimes or emergencies as the account is not monitored 24/7, so residents are still asked to report crimes through the RCMP’s usual methods- online, through the non-emergency line, or otherwise.
