New regulated online gambling market goes live in Alberta

Albertans now have access to a regulated online gambling market, with the provincial government saying the new system is designed to improve consumer protections and shift players away from unregulated websites.

The market officially launched Monday with 22 registered operators licensed to offer online casino games and sports betting in Alberta.

According to the province, an estimated 70 per cent of online gambling in Alberta previously took place through unregulated operators. The government said the new framework is intended to provide stronger safeguards for players while bringing those operators under provincial oversight.

Licensed operators are required to offer responsible gambling tools, including spending and time limits, account activity statements and access to a provincewide self-exclusion program. They must also monitor for signs of high-risk gambling behaviour and are prohibited from directing advertising toward minors or vulnerable people.

Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally said the province’s goal is to provide Albertans with a regulated option that emphasizes player protection and responsible gambling.

The Alberta iGaming Corporation will conduct and manage the market, while Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis will oversee regulation and enforcement.

The province said operators that fail to meet Alberta’s standards for player protection and social responsibility could lose their authorization to operate.

Under the new framework, two per cent of gross gaming revenue will be directed toward First Nations initiatives, while one per cent will fund responsible gambling programs, including education, research and treatment.

Alberta’s confidential 24-hour Addiction Helpline is 1-866-332-2322, including for family members worried about someone’s gambling.
