Alert no longer in effect, Clearwater County wildfire now classified as ‘being held’

Clearwater County cancelled its wildfire alert just after 3:30pm on Monday, May 18th.

The wildfire located about 5 kilometers northeast of the James-Wilson Provincial Recreation Area, 30 kilometers northwest of the Town of Sundre and 20 kilometers southwest of Burnstick Lake is now being classified as “being held”.

“Being held” means the wildfire is not expected to grow beyond its existing boundaries, and it is completely contained with a perimeter established around it.

According to the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, updated mapping has the wildfire as approximately 997 hectares in size.

Meanwhile, Alberta Forestry has advised that there is currently no risk to nearby communities – including those within Mountain View County.

Mountain View County officials point out that residents may continue to notice increased activity at the Sundre Airport and surrounding areas as a staging and operational base for the wildfire suppression efforts.
