AUC info session about Synapse Data Center power plant application process generates large crowd

Staff from the Alberta’s Utilities Commission held a information session in the Town of Olds on Thursday, May 21st.

Synapse Real Estate Corporation has applied to build a 14-hundred megawatt gas-fired power plant – along with backup diesel generation – to power a data centre in the Town of Olds.

More than 150 Community members filled up the Centennial Room at the Pomeroy Inn and Suites to learn more about the AUC’s process for the application and how residents can participate in the formal hearing process.

AUC officials stated that about 480 people so far have filed statements of intent to participate (SIP) in the proceedings. The deadline to file a SIP through the AUC’s eFiling System for this case – which is listed as Proceeding 30732 – is May 29th.

Other important dates for this year as part of the process include June 26 as the interveners’ information requests (questions) to applicant deadline, July 10th as the applicant’s deadline to respond to information requests, August 4th as the interveners’ written evidence deadline, August 18th as the information requests to interveners about intervener evidence, and September 1st as the interveners’ deadline to respond to information requests.

The AUC will communicate the details of the hearing at a later date.

Discussion about the Synapse project itself and its merits were not part of Thursday’s AUC info session.
