#OperationColdStart 2026 aims to put a freeze on theft of idling vehicles

Olds RCMP are reminding drivers not to leave vehicles running, unlocked, and unattended.

Staff Sergeant Jamie Day notes that they have seen about 10 vehicle thefts in Olds over the past quarter and many of these incidents were preventable.

Operation Cold Start got underway yesterday and it continues until Saturday with police urging motorists to use a remote starter or stay with your vehicle as it warms up in the cold temperatures.

Mounties in Olds this week will be performing enforcement and offering educational tips, and they will also be checking idling vehicles to ensure that keys are not left inside and that vehicles are properly secured. RCMP say vehicle theft can happen anywhere, in every neighbourhood, and at any time.

Police also note that if you are using a remote starter to test the range of your key fob. They say that some push-start vehicles can be unlocked and driven even if the key fob is not inside.
