Get organized, practice and be ready for natural disasters and emergency situations

Ahead of Emergency Preparedness Week, Alberta RCMP are encouraging everyone to be ready in the event of a flood or wildfire.

Families are reminded to practice the best and quickest way to evacuate their home in the case of a natural disaster. Police also say to consider making an out-of-town contact that is far enough away that they likely won’t be affected by the same disaster, and that you family could stay with if you are required to evacuate.

If you are unable to evacuate your home, RCMP ask that you be prepared to be self-sufficient for 72 hours by having enough food, water and – if possible – a secondary power source. Having an emergency kit ready, or a “grab-and-go” bag is also recommended.

The theme for Emergency Preparedness Week this year is “before, during and after an emergency – we are in it together” and for 2026 it will run from May 3-9. Learn more here.
