Road trip rolls on: Grizzlys split pair of games in Drumheller

The longest trek away from home continued over the weekend for the Olds Grizzlys with two stops in Drumheller.

The Black & Gold drew first blood in the Dragons Lair thanks to a 5-2 triumph on Friday, January 23rd. Forward Sean Richards (2006) from Vancouver, B.C. potted a pair of first period goals as Olds built up a 2-0 advantage. He would later add an assist on defenceman Ryland Molde’s go ahead tally that made it 3-2 in the third period. Molde (2007) from Morlach, Saskatchewan also chipped in with two helpers for his first three point night in the AJHL. Goaltender Corbin Sanderman (2007) from Three Hills kicked out 37 of 39 Dragons shots as Drumheller outshot Olds 39-20. Forward Calum Giese (2008) from Sherwood Park and the Calgary IHA U18 Prep team notched his first Alberta Junior Hockey League goal in the win. Forward Calder Hutt (2008) from Calgary had a goal and an assist.

The Dragons would top Olds 5-2 in a rematch on Sunday, January 25th at the Drumheller Memorial Arena. The Grizzlys won 4 of the 6 match ups with Drum during their season series.

The Grizzlys (11-26-2-2) have 14 regular season games left and their 8-game road trip has 3 stops to go. They are 1-3-0-1 on it so far. Olds will head to Drayton Valley on Friday, January 30th next for a clash with the Thunder (11-22-3-2). D.V. is in fifth place in the South Division, one point ahead of the Grizzlys but both teams are more than 10 points back of the Calgary Canucks (18-16-2-1) who are holding down the fourth and final playoff spot.

Next home action for Olds will be on Friday, February 13th at 7pm against the Bonnyville Pontiacs (20-16-2-0).
