As compared to the rest of Alberta, the Town of Olds has about a 24 per cent higher than average population of seniors.
That is according to Community Development Supervisor Heather Dixon with the Town’s Community Connection Centre. She points out that the Centre is kind of the hub that seniors can come to in order to find out about different support services. Dixon says “we know that we get a lot of phone calls from our seniors looking for different supports like housekeeping, maybe snow removal, help with forms. So there is a lot that we already are fielding and now it is great that we just have someone who is going to be dedicated to helping them every Wednesday morning.”
Options to help link seniors with social programs, as well as recreation and exercise programs will also be available during the 9am until noon time slot every Wednesday on a first come, first serve basis. Dixon says “things like possibly forms that they have to fill out for different financial assistance programs – either from the provincial government or the federal government. People who need help filling out that CPP, the application form for that or old age security, they’ll be able to help them with that.”
The entrance to the Community Connection Centre is just north of the Mountain View Museum at 4911 51st Avenue in Olds. Dixon says “our major goal here is to connect people in our community and also build a good community. So we do a lot of programs and offer a lot of services that will help our community members build strong relationships and build a strong community around us. Community Connection Centre: Connecting people, building community.”
