The Alberta Teachers’ Association believes the government of Alberta has been bargaining in bad faith.
According to the ATA, the provincial government attempted to drive a wedge between the teachers and their association.
As a result, they has filed a complaint of unfair bargaining practices against the Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association (TEBA). Grievances have also been logged by the ATA in every bargaining unit across the province – 61 in total.
ATA President Jason Schilling points out that “the government now says the 3,000 net new teachers promised during bargaining were already included in the 2025 budget. That was never part of the conversation during bargaining, especially when the government insisted they gave teachers what they asked for.”
Among the remedies now being sought by the Teachers’ Association is “a declaration that the 1,000 net new teachers per year must be funded and hired over and above the 2025 fiscal plan” and an order that the TEBA fulfill that obligation for the current school year.
