Teachers in the province have now been on strike for a total of 10 days, however, the Alberta Teachers Association says its submitted what it believes to be a realistic proposal to the province.
ATA officials say the proposal includes a “phased in” approach to manageable student/teacher ratios and what they’re calling a “fair” counter to the current three per cent salary offer.
Schilling says the proposal is along the lines of what he believes teachers have been asking for since the start.
“Now, we expect the government to respond reasonably, in good faith, and not through the media but at the bargaining table where these discussions belong.”
The Teachers’ Employer Bargaining Association is a statutory corporation that represents school boards in the province in collective bargaining for all of Alberta’s public, separate, and Francophone teachers.
This is the first teachers’ strike in Alberta since 2002 with 51,000 ATA members off the job affecting 2,500 schools and over 700,000 students.
