Every year, the Alberta RCMP reminds drivers of the importance of celebrating Canada Day safely, and this year is no exception.
According to police, on average in Alberta, one in five drivers involved in fatal collisions were drinking prior to the collision. MADD Canada says this compares to an average of about one in 20.
Additionally, within Alberta RCMP jurisdiction, during the Canada Day long weekend, seven people were killed during road-related incidents, with a total of 101 impaired drivers being removed from the roads.
“Whether celebrating the holiday at the lake or on a patio, always remember you should never operate a motorized vehicle, including boats and OHVs, if you have been drinking or using cannabis,” Sergeant Darrin Turnbull of the Alberta RCMP’s Traffic Division says.
In an effort to curb any incidents on the road this year, the Alberta RCMP has issued a few tips for drivers to remember on the roads this Canada Day.
The RCMP says first and foremost, drivers must remember that impaired driving is dangerous and criminal, as driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol impairs your judgement and reaction time.
Police maintain that impaired driving is 100 per cent preventable, so planning ahead to get a safe ride home is critical. Partiers are advised to utilize cab services, a designated driver, or stay the night, as long as you are not behind the wheel.
