Grizzlys defeat Devon, keep on stacking up shootout wins

As heard on 96.5 CKFM, it happened again – the Olds Grizzlys keep on shoot(out)ing to win.

Olds (13-18-0-0) outlasted the Devon Xtreme (6-21-2-2) in a shootout on Saturday, January 4th.

The Black & Gold remain the lone team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League during the 2024-2025 regular season that has yet to lose in extra time. They are 3-0 in overtime and 4-0 in shootouts. Minnesota’s Ben Dardis (2004) has shut the door on 22 of the 23 opposition players who have tried to beat him in shootouts this season and he has been in between the pipes for all four of those shootout wins for the OGs.

Alternate Captain Junshi Hideshima (2005) from Edmonton had a power play goal that put Olds up 1-0 in the second period.

It was Hideshima’s team leading 12th tally of the season and 4th PPG. Rookie forward Jonathan Doucette (2006) from Massachusetts picked up a helper on it and he is first on the Grizzlys with 19 assists and 26 total points.

The Devon Xtreme tied the game late in the second period and then they had a penalty shot to try and win it in overtime but, of course, Dardis was there to make yet another breakaway stop for Olds.

The Grizzlys will host the Drayton Valley Thunder (11-13-3-3) on Tuesday, January 7th at 7pm and 96.5 CKFM will have live play-by-play coverage.

Olds exits the first weekend of 2025 in 6th place in the AJHL’s South Division. The Grizzlys are 2 points back of 5th place Drayton Valley and 10 points behind the Drumheller Dragons (17-14-2-0). The Dragons – who occupy the division’s final playoff spot – have played two more games than the OGs. The Thunder have played one less game than the Grizzlys. Olds has 23 regular season games remaining with only 8 of those at home and 15 on the road.
