Wolverines extend winning streak, Grizzlys lose to another CJHL Top 10 team

As heard on 96.5 CKFM, the Whitecourt Wolverines pulled away from the Olds Grizzlys in the second half of the third period last night to secure their 9th consecutive victory.

Rookie forward Jonathan Doucette (2006) from Boston, Massachusetts tied the game at the SportsComplex at 2-all by scoring for the Grizzlys a minute and a half into the third period but the Wolverines would take it from there.

Whitecourt’s Marcello Giorgi (2005) from Stouffville, Ontario broke the tie and put his team ahead to stay at 10:34 of the third. He would then add an empty netter with under 3 minutes left in regulation time. The Wolverines would tack on one more insurance goal to make the final score 5-2.

Alternate Captain Junshi Hideshima (2005) from Edmonton has now lit the lamp for Olds in three straight games giving him a total of 6 goals this season. He put the Black & Gold up 1-0 at 5:48 of the opening period.

While that is now 9 wins in a row for Whitecourt, Olds has lost 4 straight.

On the strength of a 13-3-0-1 record, the Wolverines have the second most points in the Alberta Junior Hockey League with 27 – leaving them 1 point back of the Grande Prairie Storm for first place overall. Whitecourt is ranked 10th in this week’s CJHL Top 20. G.P. has moved up from 4th to 3rd in the rankings. The Storm beat the Grizzlys by scores of 5-2 on Friday, November 1st and 3-2 on Saturday, November 2nd.

The Grizzlys are now 7-9-0-0. Their next game is in Camrose on Friday. The Kodiaks are 9-5-1-2.

96.5 CKFM spoke with Grizzlys forward Antonio Bevacqua (2006) from Langley, B.C. following the team’s pre-game skate on Tuesday.

CKFM also collected pre-game audio from Grizzlys goalie Connor Johnson (2006) from Calgary.
