The Olds Municipal Library will celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day this week with help from the Mountain View Moccasin House and the Kiwanis Club of Olds.
Program Coordinator Jewel Stewart they will have 5 different time slots that the public can attend for story time between 9am and 3pm on Friday, June 19th. Stewart says “we are reading a story called Mwâkwa Talks to the Loon by Dale Auger. We have the grade 1 classes from Olds Elementary attending each of the sessions and the public is welcome to attend any of those as well. So we are going to read the story and then Debbie from the Moccasin House will bring Indigenous artifacts and snacks for the attendees, while she shares stories and cultural insights. Another special thing about the event is we are actually sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Olds. They purchased 125 copies of the book for each of the grade 1 students to take home, which is kind of special.”
She is hopeful they will be in a traditional tipi in Centennial Park for the sessions on Friday, but if the weather does not cooperate they will move to inside the Olds Library. Learn more about this event and other upcoming programming on the Olds Library’s website.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated on June 21st and it coincides with summer solstice. The longest day of the year is also a time of deep spiritual and cultural significance. Canada’s First Nations, Inuit, and Métis are honoured for their heritage and diversity all month long as June is National Indigenous History Month.
