The Alberta Utilities Commission has closed the initial application by Synapse Data Center for its proposed project in the Town of Olds.
Last week’s letter to Synapse CEO Jason van Gaal from the AUC states that the application by Synapse Real Estate Corp contains significant deficiencies when it comes to meeting requirements for items including environmental evaluation, noise impact assessment, and the participant involvement program.
Mayor Dan Daley says this doesn’t mean it is the end for the proposed Synapse data centre project in Olds. Mayor Daley says “it is a readjust and move forward. We do understand that they are going to reapply to AUC for the permits required to move ahead with the development.” He adds, the Town’s review of the development permit will pause until Synapse decides to move forward again. The application by Synapse to the AUC was for approval to construct and operate at 1,400-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired power plan in Olds, and when it is in possession of the information required to satisfy the requirements it may reapply. The Alberta Utilities Commission points out that it is not making a determination on the merits of the application at this time, but it is assessing whether the information provided meets its requirements.
On January 27th, Synapse Data Center Inc. announced its proposed plans to construct Canada’s largest data centre in north east Olds along Highways 27 and 2-A with a $10 billion dollar private sector investment over an estimated two-year construction period.
