At last week’s council meeting, Reeve Angela Aalbers notes that they went over some of the topics that will be discussed when a few Mountain View County representatives sit down with Rimbey-Rocky-Mountain House MLA Jason Nixon on March 16th and Innisfail-Sylvan Lake MLA Devin Dreeshen on March 17th.
Reeve Aalbers says “well some of the main impacts that we know are coming to Mountain View County are things like data centres, and so we are looking forward to having the discussion with Minister Nixon on – even though it is not his portfolio. We are looking forward to getting the provincial perspective on what the long-term vision is for the province with respect to data centres.” She says the County is also looking to get a better idea of what the long-term outlook is for provincial transfers that municipalities collect via their property taxes, such as the school requisitions and police funding.
Reeve Aalbers notes they would also like to get an update from Minister Nixon’s portfolio – Assisted Living and Social Services – on where the long-term capital plan is for seniors facilities in the future, and how that would impact Mountain View County.
For Dreeshen, she points out that the County is looking for some provincial funding to do much needed upgrades and repairs to 23rd Street in the Town of Didsbury and Township Road 314 in Mountain View County to accommodate more commercial and resource based traffic. She says “we were not successful in 2024, so we have resubmitted that application in 2025. We just want to take the opportunity to have the discussion with the Minister as to how important a project like that is between our joint municipalities and also our businesses in the area like AltaGas and the Mountain View Waste Commission.” The provincial funding application was submitted by Mountain View County under the Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program (STIP).
