The Olds Humane Society is going to have the opportunity to turn the Town’s former municipal enforcement building into its first actual established facility in the community.
Olds Mayor Dan Daley highlights the fact that council has asked administration to prepare a draft lease which is similar to other community agreements that are currently in place. He says “the society would be responsible for interior improvements, while the Town would remain responsible for the building’s exterior. With recent roof repairs now complete, the space could be available as early as March 1st.”
Abbie Cummings, Fundraising Coordinator, notes that the Olds Humane Society will be starting an “Opening The Doors” fundraising campaign. She says “we are all so excited. We are so excited the Town is supporting us in all ways – not just the Mayor and council but just our Town in general by our local businesses and the people in the community. So we love the support. We need it to keep coming and we are going to keep pushing as hard as we can.”
Cummings adds, when renovated the building, which is located behind the 7-11 on Highway 2-A, will have the potential to house about 30 animals. She says “we are hoping with a building it will give us space because right now we just have foster families which makes it very difficult to get as many animals. We are having to turn animals away right now. So the sooner we can get a larger space, the better we will be able to pull these guys out and find homes for them.”
