As Canadian athletes make history at the Winter Games, the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame is paying close attention.
According to Executive Director Tracey Kinsella, 45 Albertans traveled to Italy this month to compete for Team Canada in 15 different sports. She says “a couple of note that have competed but need to be highlighted – Jeff Reid, Alpine (skier) son of Ken Reid who was inducted into our Hall of Fame in 1980 an as a member of the Crazy Canucks. Xavier McKeever participated in cross country. Both his dad and his uncle have been inducted into the Hall of Fame – Brian and Robin McKeever.”
Kinsella points out that the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame will be on site this weekend with Olympic memorabilia on display at places including Lethbridge Polytechnic. She says “with a complete set of the Calgary Olympics including the Olympic torch. We are also at Red Deer Polytechnic this weekend – at the teachers’ convention actually – and we are bringing on site a set from the Vancouver Olympics including our famous Team Canada mitts, our mascots, and an Olympic torch from the Vancouver Games.”
Goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer from Bruderheim, Alberta had to settle for a silver medal as Canada’s women’s hockey fell 2-1 in overtime today (February 19th) to the Americans. She had previously won gold in Beijing in 2022.
After getting past Norway 5-4 in the semi-finals, Skip Brad Jacobs (Sault Ste Marie, Ontario) and his Calgary-based rink featuring St. Albert’s Mark Kennedy, Ben Hebert (Regina, Saskatchewan), and Brett Gallant – who now lives in Chestermere – will play for gold against Great Britain in men’s curling in Italy on Saturday.
The Alberta Sports Hall of Fame is located on the QEII Highway in north Red Deer.
