RCMP check stops are continuing this month and police are once again reminding everyone to plan ahead by organizing a safe, sober ride home during the holiday festivities.
The City of Red Deer’s check stop campaign saw five of them conducted between December 11th and 12th with 260 drivers inspected for impaired driving by way of drugs or alcohol.
Mounties highlight the fact that multiple vehicles attempted to avoid the check stops, which created unsafe and dangerous situations for other drivers as well as for emergency personnel.
One driver received a second impaired driving suspension and a summons for a third offence of no insurance, after being unable to maintain control of the vehicle and popping a tire on a curb while trying to avoid the check stop.
According to RCMP, also of note was that a Class 5-GDL (Graduated Driver Licensing) driver hit a parked Red Deer City Community Peace Officer vehicle. As a result, minor damage was done to the CPO vehicle but no injuries were reported. The driver was written up for careless driving and issued a zero tolerance 30-day suspension.
If you witness or suspect impaired driving, please call 911 immediately/when it is safe to do so.
Party hosts are reminded that they are still accountable and police say if your guests have been drinking or using drugs, to please ensure that they have a safe place to stay or a sober ride home.
