Red Deer RCMP launch holiday check stop season

The month of December brings an increase in holiday gatherings, and Red Deer RCMP are launching a series of check stops and traffic enforcement initiatives to keep roads safe.

Throughout December, the RCMP Traffic Unit will work alongside City of Red Deer Community Peace Officers, conducting joint check stops at locations across the city. Officers will also be carrying out Mandatory Alcohol Screening, which allows police to request a breath sample from any lawfully stopped driver, whether impairment is suspected or not. Drivers who refuse a test, or who are found impaired by drugs or alcohol, face criminal charges and immediate licence suspensions.

The goal of the initiative is to reduce impaired driving by encouraging motorists to plan ahead, use designated drivers, or arrange alternate transportation. RCMP are also reminding party hosts that they are responsible for ensuring guests have a safe way home.

Drivers with a Graduated Licence must maintain zero tolerance, and the public is asked to call 911 to report suspected impaired driving. Red Deer RCMP say they want everyone to enjoy the holiday season safely.
