Mountain View Colts go through a up and down weekend

The Mountain View Colts played two games this past weekend in Heritage Junior Hockey League action.

The Colts were in Sylvan Lake on Friday night to take on the Wranglers in a Northern Division showdown. Mountain View was unable to find traction in that contest, as former Colt Brock Lott made 34 saves in a 4-0 shutout performance for the Wranglers on home ice.

On Saturday night, the Colts were back on home ice at the Didsbury Memorial Complex to battle the Ponoka Stampeders for the third time this season. Mountain View launched 23 shots on goal in the first period, but only Cameron Jaster found the back of the net for his second of the season.

Sawyer Campbell capitalized on a beautiful 3-on-1 play from Mountain View in the early stages of the second, but Noah Wilson responded to make it a 2-1 game. Late in the period, Beau Van Vlaanderen tipped home a power-play marker to make it 3-1 heading into the third.

Van Vlaanderen added another goal in the third, along with Lucas Hoppins, Nate Smith, and Blake Stoddard, as the Colts pulled away with a 7-2 victory. Colin McDougal made 12 saves in the win, while former Colt, now Stampeder, Nicholas Smith made 65 saves in a losing effort in his return to the DMC.

Next up for the Colts is a tough home-and-home series with the Red Deer Vipers, starting Wednesday night at Servus Arena in Red Deer. 96.5 The Ranch will have live coverage beginning at 8 p.m.
