Searching a three-peat in Red Deer, Riley Braaten sets the pace on opening night

As heard on 96.5 The Ranch, Riley Braaten from Archerwill, Saskatchewan turned in the swiftest time on the opening night of the 2025 North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships.

Braaten circled the track at Westerner Days in Red Deer in his chuckwagon in a time of 80.60 seconds in Heat 8.

Heat 8 wound up having four of the top five times on Wednesday as Dwayne Dubuc was second in 80.67 seconds and Neil Salmond was third in 81.25 seconds.

Braaten is trying to win the event for a third consecutive year.

Turning to the chariots where two of the top three times on Night 1 came from Heat 1.

Cassie O’Conner won Heat 1 with the quickest time on Wednesday of 78.67 seconds followed by Allan Bengston in second at 80.18 seconds. Third in the carts on NIght 1 was Darren Twerdoclib in 80.35 seconds.

96.5 The Ranch will have coverage of Night 2 of the 2025 North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships from Red Deer’s Westerner Park today at about 5:15pm.
