It’s rural health week across Alberta, and from May 26th to the 30th, communities, residents, and local leaders are encouraged to participate by supporting the staff and volunteers who work around the clock to make sure communities are happy and healthy.
Locally, Mountain View County is urging residents to participate in community events, share their stories, and spread awareness about the challenges that come with being a rural healthcare worker. County Reeve Angela Aalbers asks all Mountain View residents to thank a healthcare worker this week, even if the gesture seems small.
“The County, throughout the whole week, really advocates to our residents to show their appreciation for rural healthcare workers in any way they can,” she says.
Supporting rural health workers is not just restricted to the week either. According to Reeve Aalbers, the county works year-round to ensure rural municipalities do not go unnoticed when it comes to healthcare spending from the province.
“ At the municipal level, our elected officials are consistently advocating to the province for ensuring we have equitable healthcare access for all Albertans, regardless of a location,” she says. “We welcome and appreciate any and all the opportunities to highlight the importance of rural healthcare, and the focus that the Rural Health Week brings to our community is so important in those advocacy efforts.”
Rural Health Week is an annual event that aims to celebrate the individuals and organizations that make Alberta’s healthcare system tick. More information on the week is available here.
