Alberta Fish and Wildlife ramping up impaired boating enforcement

The Government of Alberta has launched a new pilot program on the province’s waterways to enhance safety by targeting impaired boating in key areas.

According to the Province, operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs is one of the leading factors in recreational boating deaths in Alberta. In fact, both the Lifesaving Society and Drowning Research Centre Canada suggest that alcohol is involved in approximately 50 per cent of “boating-related” fatalities.

As a result, between May 16th and September 1st, fish and wildlife officers will bolster their patrols on lakes and rivers in and around Spruce Grove, Wetaskawin, Ponoka, Camrose, and Red Deer with the ability to determine the sobriety of boaters through the use of breathalyzers.

Within the Red Deer area, particular emphasis is being placed on Sylvan, Gull, and Pigeon lakes. Boaters are reminded that consuming alcohol on a boat is unlawful and in Canada, impaired operation laws are the same for operating a boat as they are for a vehicle on the highway, so boat operators found to be impaired may be arrested and face criminal charges.

Additionally, outside of drug and alcohol enforcement, fish and wildlife officers will also check for valid boating licenses, monitor speed and wake zones, and educate residents on responsible boating.
