Sundre High School Scorpions ready to sting the competition during Senior High Track and Field Divisionals

Sundre High School is gearing up for nearly a full month of track and field, with the first regional showing set for May 14th.

The Scorpions will have the chance to compete against some familiar faces as athletes from Cremona, Didsbury, Olds, and co-host Carstairs will be in town to run, jump, and throw their way to a shot at Zones- to be held on May 21st in Calgary.

Sundre High School Athletic Director McKenzie McElhinney says the meet is a good opportunity to cheer on local athletes who will have the chance to represent the region at the next levels of competition.

“We encourage people to come, it’s super awesome when we’ve got people, parents and community members coming out and supporting our track teams,” she says. “It always brings a good smile to everyone’s face, so it would be awesome to see some people coming out and cheering on the athletes.”

McElhinney adds that track and field is quite the tradition in Sundre, so whether its hosting or just competing, the Scorpions always have fun during the season.

“Track and field is a very popular event here in Sundre and it’s had a long history,” she says. “We’ve collected a few banners over the years, so track and field is always a very exciting time of year for Sundre.”

“It’s a very fun for us to be able to host and have all the students be able to come out and cheer on their own athletes, so I think we’re all very excited to be able to host everyone here.”

Following the meet in Sundre, first and second place finishers will head down to Calgary to compete against South Central Zone athletes of the same caliber. A full list of event times is available on Sundre High’s website.
