The Conservative Party of Canada has announced that a spot is being opened up in Alberta for Pierre Poilievre to run in an upcoming by-election.
Poilievre, the Leader of the Conservative Party, lost the Carleton, Ontario riding he had held from 2004 until 2025 in Monday’s federal election to Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy.
However, the Member of Parliament elect for the Battle River-Crowfoot constituency has let it be known today (May 2nd) of his intention to resign from his seat in order to offer it to Poilievre. In a statement, Damien Kurek notes that “we need Pierre fighting in the House of Commons to hold the Liberal government to account.” Kurek also mentions that he plans to run again in Battle River-Crowfoot in the next general election.
The Battle River-Crowfoot constituency includes locations such as Three Hills, Trochu, Kneehill County, and Drumheller.
Kurek won the riding on election night with 81.8 per cent support from voters which tied him for the highest percentage of any winning candidate in Alberta along with fellow Conservative Blaine Calkins in the Ponoka-Didsbury constituency.
The Conservatives won 34 of the 37 seats in Alberta in this election and they increased their total number from 120 at the dissolution of the 44th Parliament in March to 144 now as they form the Official Opposition to the Liberal minority government. The Liberals and Prime Minister elect Mark Carney have 169.
