Ice ageless: Legendary local names win again at Olds Farmers and Farmerettes Bonspiel

A familiar name has once again come out on top at the Olds Farmers Bonspiel.

Gene Leonard is celebrating after winning the A-Event championship for the fourth time. He was the bonspiel’s first ever champ as well. This was the 43rd annual edition of the Olds Farmers Bonspiel.

For 2025, Leonard was joined by Brian Krall, Scott Medd, and Gary Gaudette with the Town of Olds was their business person and skipped the team. Leonard says “it’s wonderful. I think our percentages are pretty even. It’s a great team and we just hang in there. He curled great. He skipped for us and Gary Gaudette is just a great curler and a great guy.”

Leonard was up 6-1 in the A-Final but then Rick Phillips mounted a comeback and in the end Gene’s rink came out on top in an extra end. Leonard says “yeah, you just don’t give up. Hang in there and things will turn around.” Leonard wanted to thank all the sponsors, the committee, the kitchen staff, the ice builders, and everybody that curls in the Farmers and Farmerettes bonspiel.

Also at the Olds Curling Club last week, John Buyks won the B-Event, Mark Mahon won the C-Event, and Todd Marshall won the D-Event. Mahon was skipping the Vista Radio/The Ranch/and the GOAT team.

Meanwhile, the 40th annual edition of the Olds Farmerettes Bonspiel also had a familiar name emerge victorious. Kim Lewis is now the winningest skip in the history of the bonspiel as she captured the A-Event title for the 5th time.

Kayla Notley took home the B-Event and Missy McDermid won the C-Event.
