Dangers of distracted driving ramp up with winter road conditions

Nearly 4,000 motorists in the province were charged with distracted driving last year.

Alberta RCMP would like to remind drivers that staying focused is extra important during the winter months when they are dealing with challenging road conditions.

Reducing the risk of collision is the reasoning behind another round of safety tips from police.

Sergeant Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic says “it may seem harmless to check a text or switch a song while driving but that second where your attention is diverted could have devastating consequences.”

Police urge motorists to pull over where it is safe and park your vehicle if you need to text, make a call, or engage in other distracting activities.

Mounties also ask that you plan ahead and before putting your vehicle in drive make sure to pre-set your hands-free device, GPS, radio or music.
