Vernon-adjacent wildfire being held as evacuation restrictions ease

The Bradley Creek wildfire near Vernon, B.C. is now classified as being held, according to the BC Wildfire Service, as evacuation restrictions ease in parts of the North Okanagan.

BC Wildfire Service said the fire was upgraded Saturday evening from its previous out-of-control status.

The agency said being held means the fire is expected to stay within its current perimeter, control lines or other established boundaries under forecast conditions and with the resources assigned to it.

The Township of Spallumcheen said Saturday evening that all areas previously under evacuation order had been downgraded to evacuation alert.

The township said evacuation alerts for other areas were rescinded.

Residents in areas downgraded to alert should be prepared to leave on short notice if conditions change, according to the township.

Environment Canada said wildfire smoke is also affecting the region and issued an orange air-quality warning for the North Okanagan on Saturday.

The agency advised people to avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the warning ends and said smoke conditions can change quickly.

BC Wildfire Service said the Bradley Creek wildfire was discovered July 31.
