Based on data from November’s complexity survey, Alberta Education has assigned Chinook’s Edge School Division two complexity teams.
It is part of Phase One of the changes implemented by the Class Size and Complexity Cabinet Committee, according to CESD Superintendent Ryan Sawula.
He highlights the fact that École Olds Elementary School and Steffie Woima Elementary in Sylvan Lake with will receive complexity teams which consist of a teacher and two educational assistants. Sawula says “so right now our student services team is working with the principals in those schools to hire those positions and kind of looking at how we can support students and staff in those schools with some of those complexity needs.”
According to Sawula, Chinook’s Edge is looking for ways to take funding and focus it on front line supports and complexities. They have heard from staff and parents that they want that to be a key priority and so he says they are doing that work internally as a school division as well. Sawula says “it is designed for that in class support. So kind of providing direct support to teachers and students. Early interventions, so identifying needs early to reduce kind of later remediation. Help deal with behaviours, help deal with learning needs of students, as well as potentially students with English as a second language or some other extra learning needs. It is kind of work to help provide support for that.”
