Alberta reveals refreshed licence plate ‘deep-rooted in provincial pride’

Alberta’s first new licence plate in over four decades is “strong and free”.

Those words are printed at the bottom of the new licence plate which features an image of the iconic Moraine Lake in Banff National Park.

The province ran three rounds of voting for the new design which resulted in Albertans casting more than 240,000 votes.

According to the provincial government, the strong and free motto is a “nod to Canada’s national anthem and Alberta’s position as a strong and sovereign province within a united Canada.”

The new licence plate is expected to be available in mid-2026 and you can get one at that time on your vehicle renewal date for no additional charge. To do it prior to your renewal there is a voluntary fee of $28.

The current Alberta licence plate was designed in 1984 and the new design “incorporates reflective technology to improve readability for law enforcement and automated systems in low-light conditions, and to meet international standards for visibility, legibility and counterfeit resistance.”
