One of the student athletes from the Olds Spartans capped off his high school track and field career in style this month.
The Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association (ASAA) provincial meet was held in Calgary on June 6th and 7th.
Jett Rosch is in Grade 12 and he won the provincial title in the shot put thanks to a toss of 13.33 meters, and he also secured a silver medal in discus by flinging it 39.40 meters – that was just behind the gold medal winning discus throw of 39.61 meters by a student from Holy Rosary in Lloydminster.
Jeff Clattenburg, Athletic Director at Ecole Olds High School, highlights the fact that Jett is a pretty accomplished athlete, they are proud of him at Olds High School, and they expect nothing but big things in his future. Clattenburg says “Jett specifically has worked incredibly hard over the last, like, three to four years. He trains year round. Throws in the winter, is involved in the club track scene, is out almost every single day throwing with coach Rachel. Kind of rain, wind, shine – doesn’t matter. So most importantly, it is an amazing accomplishment for him and to see him achieve that in his senior year is amazing.” He says Rosch recently committed to continue his throwing career at the post-secondary level at the University of Lethbridge.
According to Clattenburg, they had three other student athletes from the Spartans at the ASAA Track and Field provincials – Sydney Van Ginhoven finished in the top 10 in both the senior girls 1,500 metre and 3,000 metre races, Kendra Larson finished 8th in senior girls high jump, and Ryder Persson finished 4th in junior boys javelin. Clattenburg also points out that coach Rachel Andres is almost entirely responsible for the success of their throwing program thanks to her commitment and the numerous hours that she spends with their track athletes and in particular their throwers.
