Warning about fraudulent phone calls issued by Red Deer RCMP

Reports have been received by police in central Alberta of fraudsters calling from either a spoofed phone number or an unknown number.

Mounties say the person then identifies themselves as a bank employee demanding gift cards or cryptocurrency to assist them with removing unauthorized charges from their accounts.

Red Deer RCMP note that spoofing is the act of altering the caller ID displayed to the person receiving the call. Police point out that government organizations and banking institutions will never ask for payment by gift cards or cryptocurrency.

If you have fallen victim to this or any other scam, contact your local RCMP Detachment as well as the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Police encourage the public to visit the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre’s website to get familiar with the many different types of scams that are out there, as well as to access information and resources to share with family and friends.
