No mud or dust was able to leave the ground on Sunday, as rain washed away the final day of racing at the North American Pony Chuckwagon Championships from Westerner Days in Red Deer.
Championship Sunday was called off shortly after Noon, as the track was deemed to wet to conduct safe races.
Westerner Days was able to successfully host 4 nights of racing prior to Sunday however, with some quick times registered in both the chariots and the chuckwagons.
In the chariots, it was a battle between Cassie O’Connor Braaten and Darren Twerdochlib all weekend long. Twerdochlib’s 4 night total of 309.74 would edge out O’Connor Braaten’s 310.89 in the aggregate standings, and would go on to take the chariot crown at Westerner Days.
The chuckwagons were flying at full speed all weekend long. Riley Braaten set the pace on Wednesday (80.60) and Thursday night (78.36), taking the best time’s of both night 1 and 2.
Marvin Hubl would steal the show on Friday however, with a blistering lap of 75.73. That would propel Hubl to first in the aggerate standings and after a time of 76.66 on Saturday, his weekend work would be enough to secure him first place overall at Westerner Days 2025.
Neil Salmond had the quickest lap on Saturday, with a 76.36, but would go on to finish 3rd in the aggerate standings behind Hubl and Braaten.
Phillip Arcand would round out the aggerate top 4, all 4 of Arcand, Hubl, Braaten and Salmond would go on to split the Dash For Cash prize.
Next up for Alberta Professional Chuckwagon and Chariot Association drivers is a stop in Eastern Alberta for the Vermillion Fair starting on Thursday night.
