Water Restrictions, Fire Ban Starting On August 6 In Didsbury During Butte Standpipe Repairs

While work is being done on the Butte Standpipe, the Town of Didsbury will be implementing water restrictions and a fire ban.

Mayor Rhonda Hunter notes that council previously had approved a project to complete the repairs, and at the July 25th council meeting the awarding of the contract for the work was given the green light. She says “a while back that our Butte Standpipe, our water tower with the golfer on it, needs some work. There is some age related deterioration on it and the work needs to be done to remove the old coat and apply new coating to the Butte Standpipe.”

According to Mayor Hunter, it is a really important project for our community and it is important to get it started and completed while we have the Alberta weather cycle that we have. She adds, these projects need the cooperation of our community. She says “we really want to send the message to our businesses and residents to do their part in following the water restrictions levels that are in place. That level will be on our website and there will be other sources, social media, to get the information out and to continue the message that we we really need our residents and businesses to help us out here.”

Work on the water tower in Didsbury is set to begin next Tuesday, August 6th and that is when the Level 1 water restrictions and fire ban will come into effect. Mayor Hunter says “so that we, you know, don’t have any risk for fires in our community from campfires and bonfires and preserve and look after our water source that we have.”

According to the Town of Didsbury, the water restrictions will remain in place while contractors complete work on the Butte Standpipe and they may be moved to a different level at any time, if needed. The work is expected to take 6 to 8 weeks.

Level 1 water restrictions apply to lawn watering, filling of pools and spas, and the filling of fountains/water features. Houses with even numbers are permitted to do those things on even days, while houses with odd numbers can do them on odd days.
