A total of seven Albertans were selected over the Canada Day long weekend during the 2024 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
Two of them were taken in the first round on Friday, June 28th as the NHL gathered at the Sphere in Paradise, Nevada.
Carter Yakemchuk from Calgary and the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen was picked seventh overall by the Ottawa Senators, while Terik Parascak from Lethbridge and the WHL’s Prince George Cougars was selected 17th overall by the Washington Capitals.
In the second round of the NHL draft, defenceman Charlie Elick from Calgary (Brandon Wheat Kings) went 36th overall to the Columbus Blue Jackets, forward Andrew Basha from Calgary (Medicine Hat Tigers) was chosen by the Calgary Flames at 41st overall, and blueliner Harrison Brunicke from Calgary (Kamloops Blazers) was picked 44th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins.
The last two Albertans to hear their names called at this year’s draft went in the sixth round on Saturday, June 29th. Defenceman Eric Jamieson from Calgary (Everett Silvertips) went 177th overall to the Calgary Flames and forward Hunter St. Martin (Medicine Hat Tigers) from Edmonton was selected 193rd overall by the Stanley Cup champions – the Florida Panthers.
