Just under 75 per cent chose to remain option: Official referendum results

Nearly 75 per cent of voters who answered Question 10 in Alberta’s Oct. 19 referendum voted in favour of the province remaining part of Canada.

Elections Alberta’s official results show 1,556,316 votes, or 74.95 per cent, supported staying in Canada. Another 520,233 votes, or 25.05 per cent, supported starting the legal process to hold a future binding referendum on separation.

Question 10 recorded one of the highest turnout rates, at 70.4 per cent.

The referendum also asked voters about immigration, eligibility for provincially funded programs, citizenship requirements for provincial elections and changes to the Canadian Constitution.

Question 5, which asked whether voters should be required to provide proof of citizenship to vote in Alberta provincial elections, received 1,200,838 yes votes, or 58.06 per cent. Another 867,525 voters opposed the proposal.

Across the 10 questions, Elections Alberta reported more than 22 million votes cast. Voters could cast ballots on election day, during advance voting, through mobile voting or by special ballot.

The full results, including breakdowns by question, electoral division and voting method, are available on the Elections Alberta website.
