It has been a relatively uneventful year for local canola producers so far, if you didn’t have seeding delays.
That’s according to the Alberta Canola Provincial Agronomy Specialist
Keith Gabert points out that the Olds/Red Deer area and a little bit east is in a bit of a sweet spot for canola crop conditions at this stage of the season. He says “as you get north of Red Deer you can see a fair bit more yellow crops and drowned out areas and a little bit west they’ve had some more rain, but you don’t have to go much further north to realize that our area has got it really, really pretty good this year.”
Gabert notes they didn’t see flea beetles bothering this canola crop for the most part, it looks like it is off to a good start and they didn’t get flooded out like some of their neighbours to the far north so at this point they are pretty optimistic about the year.
