Spartans win another league title, advance to provincial quarterfinals

The Ecole Olds High School Spartans are back-to-back Big Sky League champions.

High school football on Saturday, November 8th saw the Olds Spartans finish undefeated in league play for the second year in a row as they tackled the Drumheller Titans 38-14 in the final at Normie Kwong Park.

After falling behind 7-0, the Spartans responded with quarterback Aiden Knobben hitting wide receiver Nathan Reist for touchdown passes of 45 yards and 53 yards in the second quarter.

Knobben connected with wide receiver Gabe Drente in the third quarter for a 47 yard TD strike. His fourth TD pass of the game would go to Drente for 40 yards and a score in the fourth quarter. A field goal by Fabrizio Siebert and then a throw from quarterback Ethan Deetz to wide receiver Corbin Christiansen for 15 yards for a touchdown would round out the scoring.

Olds (4-3) is ranked #8 among 3A schools with populations between 200-799. The Spartans will go to Setters Place at Great Chief Park in Red Deer on Saturday, November 15th at noon to battle the #4 Willow Creek Cobras (5-1) in the provincial quarterfinals. The Cobras advanced to provincials by beating Crescent Heights from Medicine Hat 36-7.
