Red Deer Polytechnic is teaming up with NAIT and SAIT on a cutting-edge project to turn asphalt waste into paving stones.
In a news release issued yesterday, RDP announced it’s leading a multi-year research initiative through its Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing – Technology Access Centre, partnering with Sustainable Paving Stones and backed by $450,000 in funding from Emissions Reduction Alberta.
The goal is to build a commercial unit that can produce up to 9,000 pavers per hour, using recycled asphalt shingles and pavement, materials that would otherwise end up in landfills.
The system will also incorporate a biomass furnace powered by wood waste, helping to reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.
As hailstorms and construction waste continue to strain landfill capacity, the project offers a sustainable, made-in-Alberta solution and one that highlights the role of Alberta’s polytechnics in driving real-world innovation.
The initiative runs through 2027, with field testing and full-scale production in sight.
