A new set of rules aimed at cracking down on predatory tow trucking will come into effect this week across Alberta.
As of August 8th, tow truck operators will be prohibited from approaching within 200 metres of a crash site unless invited by police, emergency responders, or the vehicle owner. Violators could face a $1,000 fine.
The province announced the changes Wednesday in a move to better protect drivers at the scene of collisions.
In a press release Alberta’s Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Devin Dreeshen, says the last thing someone needs after a collision is to be taken advantage of by aggressive tow truck operators charging excessive fees.
He added that the rules will give drivers more control in a stressful moment and help reduce insurance costs caused by inflated towing bills.
The new measures respond to growing concerns about unlicensed or unsolicited tows—some costing victims upwards of $2,500.
