Sawed-off shotgun seized by RCMP following search of residence on Stoney Nakoda First Nation

The execution of a search warrant on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation has led to charges being laid against a pair of residents of Mini Thni.

Cochrane RCMP were investigating after a recently released suspect breached the conditions of his release. His arrest and further investigation by police allowed them to learn “the suspect had hidden the firearm with a second individual” which generated the execution of the search warrant.

A prohibited sawed-off shotgun along with ammunition and imitation firearms were seized as a result of the search. In addition to Cochrane RCMP, it also included assistance from the North RCMP Emergency Response Team and the Southern RCMP Police Dog Services.

A 36-year-old resident of Mini Thni has been remanded into custody and is slated to appear in Cochrane court this week to face charges including possession of a prohibited weapon for a dangerous purpose, unsafe storage of a firearm, and six counts of failure to comply with a release order.

A 28-year-old resident of Mini Thni faces charges including possession of a firearm while prohibited, possession of a prohibited weapon for a dangerous purpose, and four counts of failure to comply with an order. He was already in custody and appeared in Didsbury court today.
