If you’re heading south sometime soon, don’t be alarmed if you spot members of the Canadian Armed Forces travelling on highways around Olds as they will be moving military vehicles from Edmonton to Calgary between May 15th and 30th.
This comes in support of the RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group, which will handle safety and security for the 2025 G7 Leaders’ Summit- to be held in Kananaskis Country.
According to the RCMP, the CAF is enhancing the safety and security efforts at the summit by providing planning support, air mobility support, rural terrain surveillance, chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive response, along with air defence.
In an effort to reduce traffic disruptions, the road moves will occur during the evening; however, drivers are asked to be diligent around these vehicles and to pass with caution. Additionally, for security reasons, the CAF is not confirming specific equipment or the number of vehicles involved in the moves.
In addition to the moves, Kananaskis visitors and residents may start to notice increased CAF presence in the region in the lead up to the summit.
The route will see military vehicles travelling west on Highway 216, south to Highway 2, west on Highway 201, and south on Highway 40.
