A real agoge-tter: Carstairs product commits to TWU Spartans

A 2004-born forward from Carstairs will be continuing his hockey career at the USports level.

Matthias Bessey has committed to suit up for the Trinity Western University Spartans. They are based out of Langley, B.C.

Bessey spent his entire Alberta Junior Hockey League career with the Drayton Valley Thunder where he was an Assistant Captain and played 160 career regular season games. Bessey posted a total of 14 goals, 48 points, and 115 penalty minutes during those games and in 2024 he was Drayton Valley’s AJHL RBC Community Ambassador. This season, he was the Thunder’s representative on the league’s Inter Pipeline All-Academic Team.

At Drayton Valley’s team awards he was named both the Unsung Hero and Fan Choice Award winner for 2024-2025.

Straight outta northwestern Ontario, Galen moved from his hometown of Thunder Bay to Alberta in 1998. After graduating from the broadcasting program at Mount Royal College (Class of 2003), it was off to the Town of Olds for the launch of the independent radio station (CAB-K Broadcasting). A fan of all seasons, Galen has been News Director & the voice of the Alberta Junior Hockey League's Olds Grizzlys on 96.5 CKFM/ROCK 104.5 for two decades and in 2024 he was excited to have the opportunity to join the team at Vista Radio and My Mountain View Now.
