Seven Fatalities Reported Due To Road-Related Incidents During Canada Day Long Weekend

More than 100 impaired drivers were removed from Alberta’s roadways during the Canada Day long weekend.

Mounties say of the 101 impaired motorists, 79 received Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) FAILs and 22 received IRS WARNs.

Data provided by Alberta RCMP shows that nearly 1,700 traffic safety violation tickets were handed out between June 28th and July 1st including 780 for drivers exceeding the speed limit, 31 for distracted driving, and 34 for improper use of vehicle safety restraints.

Sadly, Sergeant Darrin Turnbull with Alberta RCMP Traffic says there were seven fatalities due to road-related incidents over the Canada Day long weekend.

July 1st and 2nd also included Alberta RCMP Traffic enforcement initiatives on Highway 1 in the Banff and Lake Louise detachment areas. The focus was general road safety as well as targeted speeding. Police note there have been recent incidents of wildlife being struck by motorists in Alberta’s National Parks. The enforcement initiatives in the Banff and Lake Louise areas saw 144 drivers receive speeding tickets with 11 of them issued for going 50 kilometers or more over the posted limit.
