Canadians are encouraged to register, tell your family, and be inspired again this month.
In honour of the Logan Boulet Effect, Green Shirt Day is coming up on April 7th.
Boulet was one of the 29 passengers on the Humboldt Broncos bus when it was involved in a tragic collision on April 6th of 2018. The Broncos defenceman succumbed to his injuries the next day but he had been inspired by one of his coaches to register as an organ donor, so his parents offered to donate his organs so six lives could live on.
Logan’s parents Toby and Bernadine Boulet received King Charles III Coronation Medals last month in Lethbridge after being nominated by the Kidney Foundation of Canada.
Bernadine points out that it is really heart warming that the city and the community around them continues to honour Logan. She says “that they still want to talk about Green Shirt Day and they see the importance of what it does, and how it makes a difference for so many people. That day in April, 2018 was a really hard day for us. Just to know that people still support us, that people remember. When anybody passes away you want to make sure you have a legacy. You hope you have a legacy. recognize that legacy and that Logan does have one.”
Toby Boulet notes that, sadly, the fentanyl crisis in Canada has provided many, many organ donors in this country. He says “now as the fentanyl crisis is kind of getting under a little bit of control, there is less deaths. They’ve seen a slip in actual organ donations and that is sad in that we had to wait for a crisis to get more organs. We need people to follow the Logan Boulet Effect. Be inspired by someone, your grandparents. Just be inspired. Register to be a donor. Only one per cent of people actually get to donate their organs. So we’re not asking you to be an organ donor, we are asking you to register to be an organ donor.”
Go online to greenshirtday.ca to order the 2025 commemorative t-shirt, hockey jersey, and other merchandise. There is also a link there to register through your provincial organ and tissue donor registry.
Proceeds from the merchandise sales go to Green Shirt Day, the Canadian Transplant Association, and the Logan Boulet Endowment Fund.
