Jump for joy: Sundre High School soars to first provincial track and field banner in over a decade

For the first time since the 2013-2014 season, the Sundre High School Scorpions have won the 2-A High School track and field provincial banner.

Athletic Director Mckenzie McElhinney is a Sundre High alum from the Class of 2018. She points out that they have now won 15 central zone banners and 7 provincial championships in track and field. McElhinney says “I was an alumni of Sundre High, so it was kind of a full circle moment – brought tears to my eyes actually. Getting to see those banners of the past athletes at Sundre High and being an athlete myself and now second year Athletic Director it was very cool to see my provincial team win the banner.”

11 athletes were part of the provincial banner winning team from Sundre High School in Calgary including Bella Packer who won bronze in senior girls javelin. McElhinney notes that all of their athletes finished in the top 8 in their categories.  Quinn Beecrast-Schaafsma was fourth in intermediate boys pole vault. Aspen Luzi competed in high jump and long jump and placed fifth in both of those events.

McElhinney thanked all of their coaches for helping to make it happen as well including Rachel Andres, Evyn Read (past provincial high school gold medalist in pole vault), Stephen Pietsch, Sherri Leedahl and Judy Jackson.
